The Self-service box franchise opportunity

For more than a decade Snack-in-the-Box (SITB) in association with Cadbury has become renowned for its national snack delivery service to 1000s of smaller workplace sites.

The self service box concept
Franchisees look after work place sites with between 2-20 staff such as factories, offices, nursing homes, hospitals, garages, banks, school staff rooms, industrial units, colleges and shops in their areas. They deliver self-service boxes containing a 50+ range of snacks and drinks. The staff choose their selections and put the money in the cash box. The franchisee collects the takings and delivers a fresh box each week, often customising the selection within each site to suit individual needs. Franchisee Jamie Stuart-Campbell confirms "I spent a lot of time researching the market" he recalls. "I investigated a number of companies but it was the professionalism and long standing reputation of confectionery and drinks workplace distribution franchise SITB that attracted me. They really do have an excellent concept and I was particularly impressed by their offer of guaranteed income from

Case Study 1
An “unusual appeal” is how Warwickshire franchisee Chris Jones describes what drew him to invest in Snack-in-the-Box (SITB). “It’s a service that is easy to provide to people, and they are pleased to see you when you arrive to refill the box,” he explains. “It has a feel good factor and appeals to a broad range of customers; retail, scrapyards, council offices, garages - I don’t think there’s one business sector where we don’t have a customer.” Chris, who has previously worked as a fleet consultant for a computer company, originally invested in the franchise for his wife to operate. “While we were researching the market we used a questionnaire to gauge the potential of a franchise and the attitude of its franchisor,” SITB -a proven business strategy -a proven business strategy Chris recalls. “Once the potential of the SITB concept became clear, I decided to get involved in it as well.”

Prior to launching the couple underwent the SITB training programme which, Chris Jones enthuses, “covered every aspect of the business - absolutley nothing was missed”. Further support came in the form of two visits by head office staff to assist in winning business. “They started to establish the initial client base immediately following training and helped us start the business with a turnover of £1,500 per week,” he reveals. "The profit margins are just as they were told they would be and we are growing our business well.” The initial growth period took a lot of time and effort to build, and once the business reached the point where a large and stable client base had been achieved, Chris began to “cull” less profitable customers. “It is a proven SITB business strategy whereby we concentrate upon the most profitable customers so as to increase the speed of deliveries and efficiency, then begin filling the newly created capacity to add new clients, ” he reveals.

Case Study 2
An instinctive business builder - that’s what characterises Jamie Stewart-Campbell, a fast-growing franchisee with workplace snacks and drinks distribution franchise Snack-in-the-Box (SITB). It all began in 1999 when he took over the Heathrow territory belonging to a franchisee who had to sell owing to illness. At the time, it was turning over just £2,000 a week. Once Stewart-Campbell had applied himself to developing the potential of the business, he found himself doubling that figure within a year. Today, his Heathrow franchise enjoys a turnover of around £3,200 a week based on a regular 190 or so customers - and that’s still working only the same 5 days week. The secret? “Constantly refining my customer base to screen out the uneconomical ones,” he confides. “That way, you get more from each customer.” A former customer services account representative, he admits he had always dreamed of owning a business, especially a franchised one, due to all the training and support benefits involved.

“I spent considerable time researching the market,” he recalls. “I bought The Franchise Magazine and investigated a number of companies, but it was the promptness and professionalism of Snack-in-the-Box that attracted me. They left all the others standing when it came to get up and go! Besides, it really is an excellent concept, and I was especially impressed by their guarantee of income from month one thanks to the pre-canvassed customer base you start off with.” To get accustomed to the business, he spent time with the existing franchisee as part of the initial head office training session, finding the practical aspects “an extremely educational experience. You really get a chance to see what the work entails before you get involved - and it helps eliminate any misgivings you might otherwise carry into your first day as a franchisee in charge of your own territory.”
