About The Helen O'Grady Children's Drama Academy

The Helen O'Grady Children's Drama Academy is the only organisation of its kind in the UK and had its origins in Australia 23 years ago. In 1979, Helen O'Grady, a trained teacher, drama teacher and actress, hired a hall in a Perth suburb and commenced after school drama classes for children. Her aims were to provide a self-development through drama programme for children, to encourage:
  • To life.
  • Ongoing confidence.
  • Self esteem.
  • Skill in verbal communication.
  • Effective social interaction.

The Helen O'Grady Drama System for children became the basis for further expansion and since 1979, the remainder of Australia and New Zealand have been introduced to the Helen O'Grady Academies as well as Malaysia, Singapore, China, USA, South Africa and the United Kingdom. There are approximately 120 branches of the Helen O'Grady Children's Drama Academy operating throughout eight countries. In 1994, four Academies were established in the UK and there are now thirty seven in operation. Over 11,000 children each week attend classes in the UK; it is anticipated there will be approximately 18,000 students per week attending classes over the next few years.

Franchisees, all with an interest in drama, and possessing great energy, benefit from the widespread recognition, loyalty and support that the Academy receives wherever it operates. They also benefit from a stimulating, friendly and positive environment which provides them with outstanding job satisfaction. Franchisees are fully trained in all aspects of the teaching, marketing and administration of our programme. A comprehensive scheme provides pre and post launch training, continuing into Term 3 of the first year. In subsequent years, regular visits by a director or senior staff member will be made.

Advantages of franchising

    1. The franchisee is given the specialised knowledge and training needed to operate the Academy classes as a highly successful business.

    2. The franchisee becomes an independent business person within the framework of the franchise agreement and can, by hard work and effort, maximise the high earning potential of the franchise territory.

    3. The franchisee's business commences with the benefit of a name, reputation and goodwill, already established in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Malaysia, USA and the United Kingdom.

    4. The franchisee can set up a lucrative and proven business, without the need to risk a substantial amount of capital in an untried venture.

    5. The franchisee will have the full support of the franchisor in establishing the business. This support will include:
    • Selection of studio locations;
    • Advertising and marketing;
    • Training of teachers;
    • Setting up of office and administrative procedures;
    • Training in telephone enrolment techniques.
    6. The franchisee has access to the specialised, highly skilled knowledge and experience of the franchisor's head office organisation, whilst continuing in a self-employed capacity.

    7. The franchisee has the benefit of the franchisor's trade name, as well as a highly developed, well documented and successful system.

    8. The franchisee has the benefit of the franchisor's continuous research and development programmes, designed to improve and update all aspects of the Academy's operations.

    9. Through the use of the Academy's advertising programme and format, the franchisee is assured of achieving maximum results.
The franchisor promises to train the franchisee in all aspects of the business prior to the opening of the Academy and to assist in the launch. After the Academy franchise is opened, the franchisor will provide a continuing training programme for the franchisee together with support, advice, and ongoing curriculum material. This will be done by normal communication methods as well as personal visits by a Director or Training Supervisor. In return for these undertakings by the franchisor, the franchisee promises to operate the business, within the guidelines set down by the franchisor. Adherence to these guidelines will guarantee that the quality and high standards of the Academy will be maintained, thus ensuring continued success. Each franchise will become the wholly-owned business of the franchisee upon payment of a franchise fee and royalty. Our advertising and marketing programme has been devised through experience and with the assistance of a top advertising agency. It has proven to be extremely effective.

Assistance is given to franchisees in the selection of their initial studio locations.  All curriculum content and lesson plans are provided each term over a five year period. Therefore, franchisees are spared the time-consuming task of research and preparation of lessons. The Academy year consists of three 12 week terms and with the exception of the August pre-enrolment period, school holidays can be enjoyed. The Franchise is operated from home, with teaching studios being established in suitable halls within the franchise territory. Hours of work are far less than other businesses of comparable income.
