Background and Developments

Custom Made Furniture was started in 1994 by the father and son team of John and Andrew Sills, to fill a gap in the furniture market for a truly ‘Custom Made’ service, unlike traditional furniture retailers.

John and Andrew have over 50 years experience between them in furniture manufacturing. The first Retail Outlet was located at the front of the modern 11,000 sq. feet manufacturing facility at Grantham and following on the success of this unit a second Retail Outlet was opened in Lincoln in 1998.

The first Business Licenced Outlets was opened in Doncaster in June 2000 and was set-up as a pilot model for other Business Licenced Outlets.

Why Custom Made Furniture?

The retail environment today has matured to a great extent with customers demanding better quality and greater value for money. The upholstery market has been dominated in recent years by high volume, limited choice and variable quality offerings.

Today’s discerning customer wants more friendly and professional service and the ability to have their furniture designed and built to match their lifestyle and requirements – not what the retailer thinks they should have.

Things are moving faster today than at any other time in the furniture industry’s history. We have to provide fresh, modern environments in which to shop with great value goods, supplied quickly and helpful friendly staff on hand to advise and assist.
We are excited, energised and encouraged by change. We constantly push our franchisees to move forward in their businesses and we continue to evolve our concept.

For us it’s a business, a business we love, but one that is driven by sound financial logic not personal taste and feelings. All our products have to be fit for purpose and represent exceptional value for money and must evolve and change with market forces.

No licensee that has followed our formula has failed.

CMF Proposition

Without a doubt the future of British retailing is changing and people prefer to buy into service, quality and choice from retailers they can trust.

With total control of the manufacturing process, a wide range of quality upholstery with innovative, traditional and contemporary styling (all built to individual customer requirements) allied to additional complementary products people look to us to find a place where unique pieces can be supplied at value for money prices.

We trial and test products in our company stores prior to offering them for sale in the marketplace. This minimises the risk for our licensees and strengthens the opportunity. We are aware of the increasing concerns in all sectors of society about our environment. We work hard to source our raw materials from sustainable sources.

Earnings

Nothing worthwhile in life comes easily, but by following our proven concept, profits of up to £100,000 p.a are realistically within reach. On avergage, sale in the first year would bring about £250,000 of revenue. That means that the profit would be £60,000. In the second year, revenue, on average, rises to £360,000 p.a., meaning an increase in profit to £103,000. All this is definitely realistic. This is what Custom Made Furniture has to offer, and remember, none of the franchisees that followed our guidlines failed.
